Sonnet Of Something Ended
No longer need I marvel, now the lights have all gone out,
How it is that such great things can be;
When particle and wave we were I sketched in wondrous doubt,
The clear outlines of brief duplicity.
Yet if I stay to study darkness, do not think me blind -
I'm mindful of the ebb - Small butterflies
Can sense a shadow's shadow, tell a premonition's sign,
See with careful certainty who lays their eyes
Upon them. I'm not caught unawares
By an ending impromptu: Your silence, my resistance, shifted sands -
While I still at midnight gather up bright shells to share,
That day has passed I fully understand.
I've often watched the tails of stars, stared past last sunbeams red
Knowing quite well what I worshiped is already dead.
