The Swim
"Walk down with me" he said
And stood up from the mattress;
So she put on her purple dress,
Followed him downstairs.
At the end of the boat launch
He took off his shirt and shoes
Checked his pants pockets twice
Walked in till he was under.
His slender, muscled frame cut the water
And she sat on the stones, watching
Till his body was far away
All that could be seen was a bobbing head.
Then she stood, one hand on her hip
Another shielding her eyes, that gazed
Out over the still water
Like a sailor's wife.
