A Study In Magnets: Three Sonnets On The Subject Of Attraction
Part One: Shared smile: brisk blooming buzz, a sudden sparring force Of tender static; the moment's warrant seizing full attention. You circle in uncertainty; aware of risk, alert, of course, To softened edgewise pulls resembling true attraction But complex, communiqué disordered by certain centers Propelling both parts apart at last, a gasp of necessary Loss, ending with single breath all beauty this encounter Had forged clean, self-destruct codes circumspectly Etched on every surface. Then some bright insanity, unclear To others, recalls invisible pulses, opens up unfounded yearning For yet another sustainless, warm sensation to endear Itself to you, to saturate full through two souls with meaning - Science only knows through errors no one guessed What all drawings-in of kindred poles attests.
Part Two A touch: it takes no time at all to know, quick draw, Split-second collision bringing breathless awe. Immediacy's Desperate pull on definition; needing, having - the always raw Recognition of opposite - then sworn infinity's frightening intimacy. But when comfort comes, once it settles in between your cracks, Love's everything that's promised you - full soul on soul Contact. Life unwittingly rearranged so no corner lacks Reference to fairytale. When eye meeting eye makes whole Each half-piece dream, you see; You've stepped into The breach, given completely in to whimsy. Years are days, Hours are summer blossoms barely scrapbooked impromptu Between kisses, with photographs that capture only haze. Earth's splendor turns mere backdrop; for no radiant view Outshines completeness, inwrought as a birthmark overdue.
Part Three One catching sob: what bliss costs is charged by separation, In death of pure duality. Whether through mortal lease Broken or by even, red-stained palms of grim decision. Whichever agent presses grief's precise edge through the crease, Love's sudden break is unmistakeable. A vital weight Is added onto air; heartrending, unholy. Bonds unsealed Cling sticky through rewinds, backstroking against hate Till trembles fill the void, threatening "Shatter now or yield! -" Resolve to live - at least you'll feel this endless ache relax. Draw full a first free breath; linger sovereign here, a sense Of subtle raptures easing in, let taut sinews go slack. But there are those who will choose not to carry on; They bolt old doors, leave dusted shades undrawn.
