Memorial Day At Lake Michigan West Beach, Gary, Indiana
Did I tell them then? As they romped in shell-less sands Of drifting, tree-marked dunes; sands that share Their color with the soft side of a leather piece. Can Anyone bear to know? When cool lake waters dare Bodies to escape from heated air and wade in soothing blue; Where the lefthanded city skyline paints a postcard-perfect Reference to restorative rural childhood, and tender parents who Come carting coolers watch two-foot-tall treasures genuflect To soft tides. My wry eyes, spied it- hardly one mile east - Steel's ominous gray fortress sputtering dark fumes, Laying poison haze on distant vistas. I watched their beast In silence, as it cast weighty shadows on the dunes. I did not tell them what I saw, - One might as well Start shouting "fire!" at all the residents of hell.
